Job Description

Marine Electrical Engineer

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

At Blue Origin, we are constructing a new class of marine vessel purpose-built for one of the most ambitious missions in the history of spaceflight: the at-sea recovery and return of orbital-class rocket boosters. This is not a retrofit or a conversion — it is a from-the-keel-up new build, and we need an exceptional marine electrical engineer to own the electrical architecture that will make it all work.

As part of a dedicated, cross-functional team — working alongside the Recovery Offshore Operations Engineer, the Technical Lead (Analyst / Naval Architect), and a team of Project Construction Managers — you will develop, execute, and support electrical systems for a fleet of marine assets that enable at-sea space hardware recovery. You will be responsible for seamless and uninterrupted operations across a high volume of Blue Origin assets and facilities. Your work will span electrical systems engineering and maintenance, including requirements development and decomposition, technical trade study support, risk management, build execution, and verification planning and testing. In this role, you will coordinate and plan alongside Blue Origin marine teams, interface with program management and customers, and provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers and operators.

This is a rare opportunity to design and commission the electrical backbone of a vessel that will help humanity reach the stars. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Travel:

  • Ability to relocate to Cape Canaveral, Florida
  • 40–60% job-related travel, including shipyard locations
  • International travel may be required

Responsibilities

  • Develop and engineer marine electrical systems for new vessel construction and fleet sustainment
  • Develop and manage preventive maintenance plans and procedures for critical electrical systems
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors performing build execution and maintenance activities on marine vessel electrical systems
  • Troubleshoot problems, diagnose faults, recommend repairs, and develop repair scopes
  • Improve upon system design to mitigate repetitive failures and increase reliability
  • Develop drawings and specifications to define requirements for vessel repairs and modifications
  • Perform work in compliance with CFRs, United States Coast Guard Standards, American Bureau of Shipping Guidelines, National Electrical Code, and other applicable standards for marine applications
  • Read and assess blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to complete all maintenance and installation operations within best practices and maximize the performance lifetime of all systems and equipment
  • Identify and maintain critical spare parts inventories for electrical systems
  • Coordinate and communicate with management, engineering, equipment vendors, and business partners to analyze equipment design requirements and capabilities, schedule maintenance, and mitigate concerns
  • Coach, mentor, and technically assist other engineers and technicians, including the Recovery Offshore Operations Engineer and Project Construction Managers on electrical matters
  • Support integration of recovery-specific electrical loads and systems in coordination with the Recovery Offshore Operations Engineer
  • Provide electrical engineering guidance and oversight to Project Construction Managers during shipyard construction activities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with complex electrical design, operations, and maintenance
  • Recent facility development or management experience supporting mission-critical operations
  • Experience in subcontract management of suppliers including requests for proposal, specifications, and statements of work
  • Strong project management, budget management, and team leadership skills
  • Demonstrated project planning, schedule development, and cost estimation capabilities
  • Experience meeting ambitious deadlines by prioritizing concurrent tasks, developing work plans, and fostering communication between staff members, vendors, and managers across numerous departments
  • Strong safety mindset and experience, including hands-on experience planning and conducting hazardous or critical operations

Desired Qualifications:

  • Florida Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain FL PE certification in a timely manner
  • System safety analysis experience including Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)
  • Experience with failure investigations
  • Experience supporting proposal evaluations
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, manufacturing, fabrication and assembly processes, and quality control
  • Experience with shipyard electrical installation and commissioning
  • Familiarity with ABS and USCG electrical classification requirements for new construction
